I was astonished a few weeks back in my study time when I read a story from the New Testament I must have read dozens of times. John chapter four records the story of Jesus coming to the well of Jacob. Jesus left Judea and was headed to Galilee, and He took a more direct route than most every other Jew. Jesus went straight to Samaria. Upon arrival, Jesus stopped and sat down at Jacob’s well. Jesus had an appointment with a lady who had no clue who she would be meeting that day.
The Scripture says that Jesus sat down and seemingly waited for a particular woman to get there. “Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. (John 4:6b)” We know how busy Jesus must have been. He only had a little over three years to fulfill all the prophecies of the Old Testament, establish the Church, perform many miracles, and change countless lives. However, Jesus found the time to stop at Jacob’s well and wait on a woman.
In my life, Jesus has waited on me many times. This kind of Grace is incredible. Did Jesus have to come to this world and die the way He did to save the world? Surely God could have found a way around it like the Jews found a way to go around Samaria. However, Jesus took a direct route and came and confronted this world and sin face to face and won the victory. I am so thankful that even in my selfishness and hardheadedness Jesus still waits on me.
